so today president obama going to use his bully pulpit. he's going to meet with labor leaders and ceos and he's going to make the case to them that immigration reform is good for the economy. here's a look at who he's going to be meeting with in terms of the labor leaders. richard trumka of the afl-cio, eliseo medina, lloyd blankfein, and arnie sorenson, among others. so those are just a few of the folks with whom he will be meeting this afternoon. of course, time is of the essence, thomas. the president believes he has about a year, year and a half, to really make movements on some of these other policy issues, like gun control, like immigration reform. as you know, he was in minnesota yet, pressing for new gun safety measures. so i think this is a tactic you're going to see this white house continue with over the next several weeks. >> when you say time is of the essence, because of 2014, the midterms coming up. and when we talk about time, we know we have just a week to go until the state of the union address. but we're also learning th

president obama's appointment and he should have an up or down vote. i think that harry reid should go back and reconsider the whole idea about the filibuster negotiation they had last month. but, i mean, they have asked for five years of financial records from chuck hagel, they were comfortable for one year of financial records from mitt romney and suddenly for a person with few responsibilities they want more records, completely inconsistent. >> as we see from plymoupolitic republicans see the writing on the wall, but that doesn't mean they won't drag out the proceedings to extract every possible concession they can get and weaken the nominees and the white house in the process. susan, doesn't this look weird to everybody? especially when we talk about chuck hagel because basically john mccain gave john kerry a piggy back ride to his hearing. he was the biggest obstacle in the hagel hearing. and john kerry voted against the iraq surge too just like hagel did. what's the difference? >> it's not hagel's a republican or democrat, it shouldn't matter, he

but i still think democrats are going to get behind him, because obama wants him and obama really likes him and that's sort of all that matters and the republicans aren't going to filibuster him as roy blunt laid out this morning. >> does it boil down to money though? it's about the defense cuts coming. >> i just think it was kind of a bad day for the impression of politics and political theater for any american people who are watching that. there's already enough of a view that the senate -- and the house even more so, are kind of these dysfunctional partisan bodies with all this bickering. and that's kind of what you saw yesterday. probably for most people, that was the most chuck hagel they have seen in a long time and i can't imagine they were very impressed by it. look, on the budgetary side, i actually think chuck hagel can really help in bringing down the defense budget, but doing so in ways that are smart, unlike the sequester, which are across the board spending cuts, absolutely make no sense. >> before we let you go as the former spokesperson for outgoing secretary ray la hood

the only thing that is in this plan that marco rubio doesn't like is obama. as a general rule, this is a plan to move forward. >> sir, quickly, though, i want to show everybody the comparison so we can see them side by side from what's coming from the white house and what's coming from the senate. from the white house the protective visa, eight years to citizenship, more border security funding, employer requirements. as we see from the senate side the big glaring thing that stands out to me is there is no timeline for citizenship, ties border security to citizenship, and do you think when we talk about border security that that should be a separate entity while we talk about 11 million people who are in this country currently hoping to become legal americans that that should not focus how to process those that already are here and work about border security in a different passion and through a different piece of legislation? >> clearly that's where we have been and we have been working on this for a long time but this sort of shows you just how broken washin
